Repression in Italy of internationalist who fought in Rojava with the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ)

A court in Turin has ruled that the former YPJ combatant, Maria Edgarda Marcucci (“Eddi”), is “dangerous for society” and has condemned her to two years of coercive state surveillance.

Eddi, was the only one of five internationalists who travelled to Rojava who’s been subject to the extraordinary law of “special vigilance” included in the so-called Rocco Code, an Italian law directly inherited from Mussolini’s fascism and still in force. The law is not based on accusations of crimes allegedly committed, but on analyses by the police of the personality of individuals, allowing them to propose severe restrictions on freedom in order to prevent “future crimes.”
